Starting on May 25, 2018, the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation will go into effect! This new set of rules will require that all digital marketing efforts become more transparent with the information that they collect and how that information will be utilized.

Although this is a regulation from the European Union, it will still have an impact on businesses and marketers within the US. One of the biggest changes that will take place this May will be the increased territorial scope. Privacy rules are no longer based on the location of the business but instead on the location of the consumer on the site. Considering that most businesses have an online presence, there will likely be many instances when EU residents are visiting US companies’ sites. Moments such as this are when digital marketers must be careful and be aware of the latest rules.

Under the new regulations, marketers must now get explicit consent from their consumers in terms that are not illegible and full of legalese but instead are easily accessible by the masses. Penalties for non-compliance with these new regulations can cost companies up to 4% of annual global turnover! Data processors, data controllers and clouds will all be held accountable to maintain these new rules.
